Remembering that valentines day we ditched work to play in the snow. Wish it was snowing today.

So I made a Photoshop filter last night...
So I made this Soft Pencil Rendering Filter in Filter Forge last night. I started playing around with compositing it into photoshop, and I ended up with this:
Sometimes it's just fun to screw around in Photoshop. The ink drops are from a while ago, I've been using the left overs from a series Meg and I shot for fun. I've got to say isolating semi translucent objects is a pain.

Erodible Tips in CS6
I really like the new erodible tips in PS CS6. Drawing directly in the computer hadn't been something I'd particularly enjoyed, I never really liked drawing in Photoshop, Painter, or Manga Studio. Sketchbook pro was ok, but the brushes were very limited. I know some people who thrive on drawing in the computer - for me, this might be the game changer.
I doodled this in less than a half hour. This isn't a great drawing by any stretch of the imagination, but I think the technique looks somewhere between charcoal and ink wash, without needing elaborate custom brushes.
I just woke up when I drew this - so hands and feet were out of the question. I don't draw feet before I've had my morning coffee. I think this monkey needs his morning coffee too...

Play
Damnit, I was sick yesterday. I wanted to work on a more substantial illustration this weekend for IF but it just wasn't possible. I hate wasting weekend days being sick.
So, feeling a little better today, I decided to play around with some color pallets and textures I'd made /acquired. No stress, just playing around. I made the geometric head thing first, didn't like it so much - so I made the girl.

Return Fire

For Illustration Friday: return. I started by writing a list of phrases that dealt with return/reciprocation last night. This image just got stuck in my head.
Detail:
One who is injured ought not to return the injury, for on no account can it be right to do an injustice; and it is not right to return an injury, or to do evil to any man, however much we have suffered from him.

New Personal Work
I've been working on some personal pieces, I'm still working out the technique. The two below are from the last couple of weeks. The octopus was from a couple months ago. This is supposed to be sketch blog...but I haven't updated my main site in a couple of years wanted to give these guys a home. I'm revamping my portfolio - so I thought I'd share some of the stepping stones along that path.

March 3rd Sketch Binge
Here are yesterday's sketches from the doodlebook. I found some crovex- a discontinued drafting film, I aquired from my college roomate 7 years ago - I really like it as a drawing surface. I can't think of a more relaxing way to have spent a Saturday.

February Doodlebook part 1
I've been keeping a small 3.5x5 inch sketchbook around just to jot down ideas and mindlessly sketch. Here's what I did between February 12th and 17th. I pre-toned a bunch of pages with gouache, and drew in colored pencil later.

Somewhere in Dreamland
Here's what I've drawn in the sketchbook in the last week or so - in no particular order. I've been watching a lot of the 1930's cartoons particularly the Fleischer Out Of the Inkwell/Famous cartoons, and some of the Clampett Looney Tunes and Tex Avery shorts from the 40's. I suppose I shouldn't post this much all at once...whatever deal with it. :)
I really am sorry Steve Buscemi. Not that you're ever going to see this-you're a fantastic actor. |

It Came From Facebook
Sometimes I post random illustrations for my Facebook friends and nowhere else. Here are some random illustrator pieces I've posted to the Facebook - and the full spaghetti monster from the test post. I've got more sketches to share, but I'm lazy and haven't scanned them yet.
